New Students - Getting Started
- Observe a class: We require all new students to come observe a class prior to enrollment. Please contact us to schedule a time to come watch the fundamentals class. We do not offer trial classes at this time and please no walk-ins for it is disruptive to the class in progress.
- Enrollment: When you are ready to start training please contact us. We will require a consent form signed and membership dues need to be paid in advance for the first two months. Please note that mid-month enrollment means you will not be starting class until the beginning of the following month.
- Orientation: Schedule for a time to come in for an orientation on a Saturday. The orientation covers basic class protocols, intro to karate, and any fitting of your uniform. You will be provided a student handbook with some very helpful information.
- Start Class: Starting class can be overwhelming but keep in mind everyone started this way. It usually takes about 4-6 weeks until people feel comfortable with the movements. If needed we can assign a senior student to assist you for the first few classes.

We practice Shotokan Karate-do. Shotokan is the most widely practice form of Karate in the world. It's Okinawan founder was Gichin Funakoshi whom introduced this art to Japan in 1922. The core of our training invloved kata(forms), kihon(fundamentals), and kumite(sparring).
How many belt ranks are in this style?
There are 8 kyu(color belt) ranks in this style. The belt order is white, yellow, orange, green, purple 1, purple 2, brown 1, brown 2, brown 3, Shodan(black belt).
How often do you test students?
We practice belt requirements in class however it is up to the student to know what is expected for testing. Each belt has a different requirement which is available in the dojo and from your instructor. After a consistent practice period, students will be recommended to test only when the instructor feels they are ready. It generally takes 3-6 months for most students if you attend class regularly. There is a small exam fee which covers your exam, certification and belt.
Do you practice for competition?
We do not compete for Karate-do was originally designed for self-defense not sport.
Do you practice sparring?
We practice several forms of sparring from 5 step kumite, 1 step kumite, to free sparring at the higher ranks. The principal is to get control of yourself before you can control an opponent.

Due to the complexitiy of getting started we do not offer trial classes.
I have a black belt from another style, can I wear it?
No previous training is ever wasted! We respect and celebrate Yudansha/Students from other styles, however this dojo is for Shotokan-ryu training only. You will need to empty your cup in order to learn and grow. Many of our dan level Shotokan members hold ranks in Goju-ryu, Shorin-ryu, Shito-ryu, Isshin-ryu, Taekwondo, etc. They all started over with a white belt and went through the Shotokan system properly, which is the expectation for all new members entering this club. If you have earned a dan rank from an accredited and recognized Shotokan organization, please speak with Sensei about how your rank may carry over.
