Everything you need to know about us
..

The Bend Karate Club strives to maintain and preserve Shotokan Karate-do as a traditional martial art.

We practice budo style Shotokan Karate using the 3 core training concepts of Kata, Kihon, and Kumite. Through humility and ongoing study, we will continue to develop and refine techniques using good body mechanics.

About the BKC

The Bend Karate Club was founded in 1986 by Tim Hanlon Sensei. Hanlon Sensei was a direct student of Takayuki Mikami Sensei and Hidetaka Nishiyama Sensei. For several decades Sensei was involved with the JKA/AAKF/ITKF/JKA Northwest as a medical judge and competed heavily as well. Currently Sensei Hanlon provides guidance, mentorship, and is the chief examiner for our students.

A club is only as good as it’s teachers, instruction, and members. We have Senpai (senior level students) who are instructors and mentors to the dojo. They have trained under Sensei Hanlon for many years and hold the responsibility to pass on the training knowledge to students. Our dojo members are a great group of people who train hard and work together. Our ages and ability levels vary greatly though we all share a common ideal through Shotokan training.

Training Philosophies
  • Karate-do is for self-defense only
  • Karate-do is not a sport
  • The Dojo is not a fight club
  • Techniques should follow natural movement
  • If it hurts adjust your training
  • There is no place for ego in the Dojo
  • Never compare yourself to others

  • Doryoku no seishin o yashinau koto: Endeavor

  • Kekki no yuu o imashimuru koto: Refrain from violent behavior
