Traditional Shotokan Karate

Karate-do is a means to improve ones life physically and emotionally through training.

The Bend Karate Club strives to maintain and preserve Shotokan Karate-do as a traditional martial art.

We practice budo style Shotokan Karate using the 3 core training concepts of Kata, Kihon, and Kumite. Through humility and continued study, we will continue to develop and refine techniques using good body mechanics.
The challenges we face and struggles we overcome in the dojo help us to become better people. We make every effort to follow Master Funakoshi’s dojo kun:

  • Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuru koto: Seek perfection of character
  • Makoto no michi o mamoru koto: Be faithful
  • Doryoku no seishin o yashinau koto: Endeavor
  • Reigi o omonzuru koto: Respect others
  • Kekki no yuu o imashimuru koto: Refrain from violent behavior

The Dojo

We train on a wood floor that has plenty of room for classes. Mirrors are placed on each side of the dojo so that the students can study their stances and movements along with hand railing for assisting in training kicks.

Dojo

A club is only as good as it’s teachers, instruction, and members… We have Senpai (senior level students) who are instructors and mentors to the dojo. They have trained under Sensei Hanlon for many years and hold the responsibility to pass on the training knowledge to students. Our dojo members are a great group of people who train hard and work together. Our ages and ability levels vary greatly though we all share a common ideal through Shotokan training.

Beginners Class

Our beginner classes is designed for new students to establish a strong foundation in Shotokan Karate. The beginner class teaches katas, kihon(basic blocks and punches), stances, controlled sparring drills, and self-defense.

Intermediate/Advanced Class

The intermediate/advanced class is by invite only and focuses on more intermediate to advanced training concepts. The curriculum will be focused for green belt and above.

Open Class

On Saturdays we have open training time at the dojo. It is a good time to get individual instruction from Senpai and/or self-train what you have learned during the week at formal class.

The ultimate aim of the art of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the characters of its participants.

MASTER FUNAKOSHI Founder of Shotokan Karate-do

Martial arts philosophy is not based on victory or fighting, but rather on finding a way to avoid violence through having the ability to defend yourself, if needed.
