Kumite or sparring, is the application of techinques against an opponent. The ultimate goal is to equip a person with enough skill to protect themselves effectively.
Kumite is very controlled when first learning using gohon kumite (5 step sparring) for the first 2 belts, then ippon kumite (1 step sparring) up to blackbelt, and eventually jiyu kumite (free sparring). Through this training, you learn is to control yourself physically and mentally.
